I actually did this post last Saturday, but somehow it disappeared into I know not where, as I was leaving to go to a place called windy harbour where there is no power, phones, not even mobile/cell phone coverage, I have been unable to do anything about it until today. Had a great couple of days, and the world was still here when we got back.
Saturday saw Kay & i of on an amazing journey (especially if you are from the southern hemisphere). First to Warren where I saw the first of many covered bridges
Stopped at beautiful waterfall, had lunch of turkey & cxranberry rolls, hot mulled cider, sitting on a deck over another delightful mountain stream, just superb. At Watertbury we took a side road & saw a great quilt dis[lay, a round barn with lovely gardens, & a teddy shop. From there we headed for Stowe & along the way we visited a cider mill, cheese factory & a chocolate place all having wonderful things to sample, which of course we did, also see some great locally made hand crafts.
We passed Ben & Jery's icecream but didn't stop as it was too crowded. Later on in the trip I did go to one of their stores & had an oreo shake, it was as good as I had been told. Late in the afternoon we finally arrived at the Von Trapp family Inn where some of the family still live, saw the sun setting on the hills across the valley & it looked just like they were on fire, with all the blazing colours.
It was dark when we reached Stowe, but it was still a beautiful place, with all the lights on it was like being in fairyland.
Just so hard to describe, all dat we had driven through trees, trees & more beautiful trees. Just when you thought there couldn't be anything better, you would come around another corner & it was just as lovely. Something intriguing I was to discover about NE was that in every little village or town there was at least one white spired building, be it a church or a town hall, they all had one & they were all beautiful. I had to keep pinching myself to see if I was dreaming this truly wonderful part of our world, & the people in it.
After church & fresh bagels for lunch Kay & I were off again. This time we went to Daikin Farms where they make the best maple syrup, jellies/jams, mustard, & the best fudge ever, maple nut, my mouth is watering just writing about it. Fort Ticonderaga was the next place on the agenda, we drove through NY state, scenery stunning again, farmlands with their neat barns & silos, saw my first canadian geese, again later in the trip I saw them winging their way south in those lovely V formations, that we know from pictures & movies.
A couple of days exploring Vermont, then took the train to Boston, Trees, fields, rivers, little streams, neat farms, everything about NE enchants me. After following the freedom trail I decided to take myself to Nantucket (that's the sort of thing you can do when you are travelling alone). On the bus to Hyannis port I travelled a young lady, Adona, she was to become o good friend in the years since.
On the ferry to Nantucket, I talked to Bob & Mabel Lee, who were also travelling with their bears. We agreed to meet for diner that evening. I never imagined I would see anyting more beautiful than in NE, but when I walked up Broard St Nantucket, I knew I was somewhere just as lovely in a different way. While waiting outside the Nesbitt Inn, the delightful old Victorian B&B where I was staying, for Bob & Mabel to arrive, I started talking to another couple, Margaret & John Almy, from Conneticut, they were most interested in me & my travells. So the next 20 mins., were spent filling them in. Bob & Mabel arrived & off we went to have dinner.
The next morning I was up early as I wanted to explore as much of the "faraway island" as it is known, as possible. When I got hungry I went into a little cafe & ordered pancakes, which when they arrived were three, very large & 3" thick. I looked at them & turned to the young couple sitting next to me and said "I will have to wlk around the island 3 times to work these off." I was totally amazed when she replied "You must be Jacqui." I agreed that indeed I was Jacqui but how did she know, she went on to explain that they were staying at the same Inn as John & Margaret, the people I had talked to the previous evening & they had regaled the other guests with the story of this Australian women & all she was doing.
I spent the next hour with Chris & Lisa before they left to catch the ferry & head back to Georgia, but not before they extended an invitation to come & visit them there.
Nothing is too small to know, and nothing is too big to attempt.
